Prof. Chu obtained his PHD degree in materials science at Harbin Institute of Technology in 2000, and in the same year moved to Institute of Physics of CAS as a postdoc to carry out research on magnetism and magnetic materials.

During the period from 2001 to 2004, he was engaged in research on surface science, such as study on atomic structures at surfaces and interfaces using X-ray Photoelectron diffraction and Holography (XPED and XPEH), as a research fellow at Institute of Industrial Sciences at the University of Tokyo and Tokyo University of Science. In 2004 he joined National Center for Nanoscience and Technology of China.

Currently, The Chu group focuses on the following research:

  1. Nanomaterials for cathodes for lithium ion batteries. Practical applications of cathodes with high energy and power density such as Ni-rich tertiary compounds with layered structures, olive LiFePO4, spinel LiMn2O4, and their derivatives, exploration of novel types of cathodes such as cathodes for Li and Na ion batteries, and insights into the relationships between crystal structure, microstructure and electrochemical performance

  2. Nanofabrication. Fabrication of diversified artificial nanostructures and development of nanofabrication technologies

  3. Optical metasurfaces. Manipulation of optical wavefronts based on metasurfaces composed of meta-atoms or meta-molecules

  4. Nanosensors based on Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) and low dimensional materials. Development of ultrasensitive SERS probes and detection of biological molecules and trace pollutants.

The Chu group offers research opportunities for students interested in theoretical calculations and/or experiments.
