Duan’s lab is broadly interested in self-assembling phenomena and involves identifying problems of fundamental significance in nanochemistry. Our approach involves the synthesis of materials that contain both molecular and inorganic components, and study of their structure and properties by a variety of physical techniques. We are currently studying nano-/molecular assemblies mostly in one of three areas: (1) photochemistry and photophysics of nano- and mesoscopic self-assemblies, (2) nano- and mesoscopic self-assemblies: self-assembling molecular wires consisting of one-dimensional inorganic complexes, self-assembling metal nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes and organic molecules, (3) self-assembly of designed nanoarchitectures from chiral compounds and chiral nanomaterials. In general, we use the tools of synthetic and physical organic chemistry to address problems at the interface of chemistry, photochemistry and materials science.
