1. Overview of the Program  

Nanoscience and Technology Program, aims to educate students with the necessary interdisciplinary knowledge to contribute to the long-term nanoscale research and development, which will lead to potential breakthroughs in areas such as materials and manufacturing, electronics, medicine and healthcare, environment, energy, chemicals, and biotechnology.

The research field includes: Process, nanomaterial characterization, nanodevice design and fabrication, nanostructural observation and manipulation, nanobiology and medicine and etc. The goal of Nanoscience and Technology program is to train students in carrying out original research in nanoscience and technology, and to cultivate independent and innovative thinking.

2. Application Guidance 

1)   Degree Offered 

Master of Science in Chemistry/Materials/Biology/Physics

Students are required to undertake course work, attend seminars and conduct thesis research. A thesis research is considered an essential part to the degree.

2)   Professional Courses Offered in English  

Courses Structure  

Students are required to take Chinese courses, professional courses, and academic activities. The program provides a comprehensive professional education and research in nanoscicence and technology. The courses are scheduled to permit either intensive study in a single area or interdisciplinary study between areas. Comprehensive introductory courses are given to provide a common basis of understanding among those with dissimilar backgrounds. Professional courses are selected in consultation with the graduate coordinator or a faculty advisor to meet his/her academic and career goals. The normal period of this program is 3 years.

Note: Please refer to the school website for the actual Curriculum arrangement in each academic year. Relevant courses for thesis from other schools or departments can also be selected. Most courses given in Chinese are also available for foreign students.

3)   Thesis

Students are required to conduct an independent research project supervised by a faculty member with an interest in the particular topic of their own research. A written master thesis research proposal and a formal presentation are required in the second term. A mid-exam proposal and a formal presentation are required in the forth term. Students are required to submit a thesis in English with an executive summary in Chinese and the final oral thesis defense is required.

4)   Qualification of Applicants

Applicants are expected to hold a bachelor’s degree in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Materials or related field with satisfactory performance. The program committee will evaluate the applications and conduct interview if necessary. The graduate students from this program should be creative and able to conduct a nanotechnological project investigation.

3. Scholarship 

1)   Chinese Government Scholarship

The Chinese Government Scholarship covers 7 programs, including Bilateral Program, Great Wall Program, EU Program, PIF Program, etc., to sponsor international students and scholars to study and research in Chinese universities. The scholarship offers a fee waiver of registration, tuition, health insurance, on-campus dormitory accommodation, etc. Please refer to the website of the China Scholarship Council (http://www.csc.edu.cn/Laihua/) for detailed introduction, qualifications of applicants and admission process. UCAS is one of the Chinese Government Scholarship universities. The eligible applicants may apply to the China Scholarship Council by recommendation of the related national official departments and Embassy or Consulate of the People's Republic of China. The scholarship usually starts in November and finishes the following April. Due to the different deadlines of countries, please check relevant information in time. The International Students Office of UCAS will offer pre-admission notice if needed.

Applicants may also apply by UCAS recommendation (see http://english.ucas.ac.cn/). But this is only for a small number of excellent international students who are not currently studying in China.

2)   CAS-TWAS President’s Fellowship Program

The scholarship offers a fee waiver of application and tuition and provides health insurance, on-campus dormitory accommodation. UCAS is one of the authorized institutions supported by the CAS-TWAS President’s Fellowship. 3)   UCAS Scholarship for International Students for Graduates programs

The UCAS Scholarship for Foreign Students for degree programs offers waiver of tuition and registration fees, and provides health insurance and on-campus dormitory accommodation.

4. Graduate Research Areas 

1) Nanodevice: To focus on the fabrication and integration of nanodevices, which includes: novel nanodevice fabrication and integration; high sensitive, high selective and fast responsive sensing technique based on novel nanostructures; high efficient energy conversion materials and devices, high performance energy storage materials and devices, and their integration system.

2) Nanomaterial: To engage in synthesis and self-assembly of new namomaterials, and promotion of the application of functional nanomaterials in alternative energy and environment.

3) Nanobiology and Nanosafty: To engage in characterization and modulation of nanomaterials under bio-enviroment; bioeffects and analysis of nanostructure; medicinal micro-nanosystems and technical integration; biomedical molecular engineering and nanotechnology; evaluation of effectiveness and safty of medicinal nanomaterials and devices.

4) Nanocharacterization: aims at elucidating the structure-property relationship of low dimensional materials, to explore the assembly and functionality of molecular and nanoscale entities, and to developing the methodology and instrumentation for optical and electrical characterization of nanostructured materials.

5) Nanomanufacturing and application: To fabricate hierarchically structured polymer nanocomposites, multi-functional polymer based nanostructure for optical and electrical applications.

5. Campus Learning and Life 

NCNST is the door which opens to the world of opportunities for the new researchers who are interested in nanoscience and technology, by providing the education and research of global standards with a system excellence in practices, theories, research, funding resources and standards. All the experimental and Characterization labs are fully furnished and well equipped. A team of qualified engineers and professors is there for the coaching of young researches.

NCNST offers a number of linguistic courses for the foreigner students to make them familiar with Chinese language. A wide range of training and subjective courses are being organized in order to provide the best academic environment and to broaden the knowledge of young talents. Moreover, well reputed universities from all over the world have collaborations with the center which results in the symbiotic learning.  

The campus activities are rich and colorful. Annual games of the faculty members and students not only provide a source of joy but also create sports man ship in them. Film Club is one of the famous recreational activities for all the researchers. Orientation party， New Year Party, International Culture Day and Graduation ceremony are also enriched with colors of happiness. Besides study, students spend considerable amount of time to improve themselves in various other aspects.

NCNST is a home of Nanosciences which is a fusion of knowledge, abilities, communications and emotion. Nothing else is more beautiful than its campus life. 6. Application Documents 

1) Download the attachment and fill in the form with a 2-inch photo and applicant’s signature. The applicant cannot apply to more than one supervisor .

2) Photocopy of passport (at least 2 years validity) personal information page

3) Original notarized photocopy of degree certificate: Master’s program applicants need to submit their Bachelor’s degree certificate. Doctoral program applicants need to submit both Master’s and Bachelor’s degree certificates. (Those who have not graduated yet shall offer a proof of education and expected graduation time in their current academic institution)

4) Original transcripts or original notarized photocopy of transcripts: Master’s program applicants need to submit the academic transcript of their undergraduate study. Doctoral program applicants need to submit academic transcripts of both graduate and undergraduate studies.

5) Recommendation letters from two professors or equivalent: the referees should be experts or scholars in the applicant’s field other than the supervisor applied to. A recommendation letter should be printed on paper with the name of the referee’s affiliation, with the applicant’s signature and date, and be sealed.

7. Admission Process 

1) Find an Eligible Host Supervisor in the center 

Applicants who are eligible and meet all the eligibility criteria above may contact an eligible supervisor of the center and send the hard/soft copy of their application documents to the supervisor. 2) Get a Host Supervisor’s Acceptance

The supervisor checks and evaluates the applicant’s academic ability according to the admission regulations of NCNST. Two or three experts might be invited to conduct an interview with the applicant or a written examination will be taken if necessary. The supervisor then makes a decision as whether to accept the student by making comments and signing on the supervisor’s comment page in the admission application form and submit all the necessary documents to the institute/faculty.

3) Faculty/Institute Approval

The application will be reviewed by NCNST to decide whether to accept the applicants. If approved, the center completes the comment page of the admission application form and sends the stamped application form along with all the application documents to UCAS International Students Office.

4) UCAS makes the final review and prepares admission documents

UCAS prepares the admission and visa application documents for eligible applicants after final review. The outcomes of evaluation meetings on scholarship applications will be announced once the expert panel makes the decision.
